THE THREE GEMS OF HINDU CULTURE

THE THREE GEMS OF HINDU CULTURE

Bow humbly thyself O! visitor,

Then only may you enter:

This edifice is not a marble mere,

But the quintessence of Hindu sculpture! (Ku.Vem.Pu. in Kannada)

No one can visit Halebeed and Belur without seeing the outstanding examples of Hoysala art of sculpture. The twin temples of Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara at Halebeedand Channakeshava temple at Belur are famous for their finest filigree work of sculpture and new style of architecture. A visitor to these places will never miss the chance to see the great monolithic image of ‘Gommata’ the rarest of its kind at Sravanabelagola which is about sixty miles from Halebeed.

It was a very good thing that we had an opportunity to arrange a short trip from our college, to these three places on 20th September 1969. Though I had visited these places before, I found that I experienced a new pleasure when I visited these places again in the company of my friends and learned members of the college staff.

First we visited Halebeed, the shrine of the grand capital - Dorasamudra where Hoysalas ruled during 12th and 13th century. The twin temples at Halebeed were built at the time of Vishnuvardhana, the ablest king of Hoysala Dynasty, who was a great patron of art and literature. These temples are built in the name of the king and his wife, Shantala Devi. It was at his time the construction of Channakeshava Temple was commenced. It is said that these temples were built under the guidance of the famous sculptor Jakkanna.

These three temples are star shaped, built on a platform of about five feet high. The outer walls of the temples are decorated with finest carvings in nine to eleven successive horizontal friezes of elephants, tigers, horsemen, birds, and ‘celestial beasts’. High above we find the famous female bracket-figures in different dancing and other poses. The door of the ‘Gharbhagriha’ the walls of the Sukanasi and the ‘Navaranga’ with many Pillars are also full of beautiful carvings. The finery of execution , the grandeur of style, the exquisiteness in expression and emotion, brought out in the images are the rare qualities of these carvings.

Our next visit was to Sravnabelagola. The colossal statue of ‘ Gommata ‘ a Jain image was constructed by Chamundaraya, a minister of Gangas during the last decades of 10th century. This image is cut out in a single block of stone of the hardest species on Indragiri, a hillock. The statue is 57 feet high, that is, about the ten times the size of a man. In size, difficulty of execution, boldness of conception, style and perfection, in its proportion, it has no rival among the sculpture in the world. The look of piety and renunciation that is writ on the calm face of ‘Gommata’ or Bahubali is a marvelous achievement of the sculptor.

The melody remains , even after a sweet song is over. The happiness that we got after witnessing the great works of architecture will remain with us for a long time.

TIPS TO YOUNGSTERS (PRINCIPLES OF SUCCESS)

1) The main aim of all companies, is to make profit. Other aspects are secondary. To survive ,a company has to satisfy its customers, standing against keen competitions. Otherwise his firm cannot survive. It keeps only such workers who work for the interest of the company. Otherwise it will not survive.
2) The Management and the executive are there to look after the interest of the company for their own survival. They cannot keep a worker who is not interested in company’s welfare.
3) The Head of the management has great responsibility and risk in running a company. It is not an easy task or a joke to run a company or an institution. It is his responsibility to make the firm successful. So he should not ignore or tolerate any worker under him who bluffs or tells lies with him. He has to fire such a person out of the company. He should not keep any worker who does not work for the interest of the firm, but thinks of his own interest. So the Executive Head of all successful companies follow merciless policy with their workers. The Boss of the company expects sincere work, honesty, integrity, complete obedience and dedication in work from his subordinates. It is really necessary.
4) The qualities of an Executive Managing Director is usually unique. He can understand a person’s character by his behavior and attitude .So any person who thinks that he can fool his Boss, he himself becomes a fool and a victim. He also has the capacity to understand the ability of a worker and his draw-backs. He has to be reserve, but has appreciation, love and consideration for good work.
5) The Company, The Management and The Executive may be considered, as a whole, ‘Employer’, Others working in a company or institution, are ‘Employees’, whatever high position (they) may be, they are working in.
6) In short, Company is there for the benefit of the capitalists, but not for the workers. One must read the drama, ‘STRIFE’ written by John Galsworthy, carefully and deeply to understand the psychology of the both. So workers must be very careful while dealing with the management, because they are merciless.
7) The success of “an employee” is in the policy he adopts. ‘Honesty is the best policy’; the old saying is the only policy that he has to follow to achieve success.
8) An employee must remember that a company or an institution‘s main aim is to make profit and to survive. The employee also should adopt this aim as his own , otherwise he will be a failure.
9) The employer expects complete obedience, integrity, dedication in his work, punctuality, polite behavior and ‘less talk and more work,’ from his employee. So an employee should follow these norms for his success. An employee has to obey his boss willingly whether he likes his orders or not.
10) An employee has to follow some “DON’T” policies to survive and earn good name. They are: Do not gossip about executives or others. Gossiping is a very bad habit. Do not complain, criticize or talk lightly about higher officers or colleagues. Do not boast yourself . Never go on leave for small causes, but use it only when it is quite necessary. Never lose your temper. Try to be satisfied by what you get. Never feel jealous of others. Always be frank and polite. Do not contradict or deny anything on the face of a person, out rightly; just like ‘ You are not correct’, ‘You are lying’, ‘It is not so’, or ‘I know it, better than you’. (It shows too much EGO of a person and hurts the ego of the other. ) If , not agreeable, keep quiet, if asked for opinion, say , politely, ‘I don’t think so’; if only, needed , try to explain calmly, better avoid argument, and emotion. Argument is necessary only when one wants to convince a person/s for some benefit or some purpose.
11) Ego (svabhimana - durabhimana), is a problem that everyone suffers from; that too when it goes (raises) beyond a limit. If we take that 40% is a tolerable are desirable limit of Ego (40 to 45% range is taken for granted), and at that limit a person can easily and willingly can express ‘sorry’ for his mistakes and understand his mistakes quickly. If it is 45 or 50% (presumed-not exactly) one (he/she/I) may hesitate to express ‘sorry’ for his mistake, but try to defend it. That attitude makes others annoyed. Everybody should avoid such thing (such attitude), as it does not help to develop one’s personality. Serious aspect is , if that Ego is between 51% to 60% (presumed) the person fails to understand his mistakes , but defends his/her deed strongly, and always thinks he is right (he/she is always right!) ; the other is wrong: feels it is an insult to ‘beg sorry’ for his mistake. Such persons hesitate to take others’ advice, and find fault not only with others but in everything. It is very difficult to convince such a person. Having too much Ego, sometimes leads to over confidence and failure. Good people avoid such persons. To get –away from such Hyper-ego one must practice ‘Introspection’ and ‘Dyana’ (Yoga), for 15 minutes every day, to find out how & where his/her thoughts arise and ,’Am I wrong anywhere?’, and Sublime his Ego. If, not possible consulting a psychiatrist is necessary and it is not a shame. So particularly young persons should be very careful not to have too much Ego (because it is natural in young age). If this Ego is too low, he may accept others’ mistakes as his own and may become cheap, having low or inferior personality. Every one should remember the old saying ‘Err is human and to accept it, is godly’. If he/she finds that a mistake is committed , it is good to accept it immediately, and explain the cause afterwards. Such polite and frank behavior will be appreciated by everyone.
12) Be friendly, but talk less .Always look happy . When there is disagreement, smoothly place your argument if only it is necessary, or smile and avoid argument. When annoyed about others , one must search ones own mind and make an introspection to find out ones own short-comings and defects. Do not develop prejudice against anybody or too much trust on any one.
13) To gain confidence of others one should always speak the truth. It must become a habit. So one should speak cautiously, so that a lie must not slip from his tongue. Such a person will gain full confidence of others. Only one lie will mar the personality of a person. A lie that is uttered will be detected to-day or tomorrow and make him unreliable . More over, telling a lie is a cowardly act, not a clever act ,but a foolish thing. It is easily detected, but not told on the face of that person, only the person who tells lies will lose his/her personality, and also loses trustworthiness and confidence of colleagues, friends, relatives and even his officers. By telling a lie, and showing cleverness, or trying to fool others, that person will lose everything. Because , ‘When character is lost, everything is lost. So by telling a lie, one has fooled himself or herself but not others. Friends and relatives talk behind him as an unreliable-person, but never tell it before him. Hence such a person knows not what others think about him and will develop a ‘false prestigious personality.’ His success becomes a dream, but he will not understand it, but complains about his fate. So it is always better to be courageous, and truthful. If, for fun or joke, a lie has been told, it is a better policy to confess afterwards that it was not true, but only a joke. Otherwise it will be reported to others and there is a danger that will be proved that former [the first person] is a liar. A truthful man, whether he is rich or poor, gains respect everywhere. It gives credibility to a person. Credibility is a big asset to one’s personality and it is the basement of success. So fear not to speak the truth and , feel no shy to say , ‘sorry’ for a lie. Confession of mistakes makes a person greater. Hence, for achieving success one should be straight both in speech and deed. But in business matters and business secrets a lie is sometimes necessary and tolerable, even excusable. It is an accepted norm in society. Because one neither cannot reveal the secrets of his business nor keep silent before his customer. Leaving business secrets, in all other aspects a businessman should be very honest with his customers and colleagues, otherwise he will not survive.
14) Telling lies and concocting facts and stories, becomes a habit; that too enjoying habit. So one should be careful not to indulge in loose talks or exaggerate facts. It is a minus point in developing personality and achieving success in life.
15) To keep a word or promise is a worthy quality of person. Whatever a truthful person says is a promise. Nobody asks a truthful person to promise a word. So do not say things that you cannot carry out. Even in small occasions one should keep his word. For example if an appointment is given by you , you have to attend it in-time or inform that you are not coming. If not, you become an unreliable person for a small negligence. In the long run you may miss a needy help for your neglect and ego, because the persons who are hurt by your neglect may ignore you. Afterwards they will neglect you. So always be careful about keeping your word. Small mistakes make a man ‘man of small personality’ or ‘low personality’.
16) A person must feel and express, and remember the help received , whether it is small or big. ‘Thanks’ must be expressed heartily; some youngsters forget to express it; it is violating the etiquette of social behavior. Forgetting the help, small it may be , is a sin, and it is a black mark on one’s personality. The quality of gratitude is very necessary for every person. A word of help or recommendation may change the fate of a person. A person may not help us actually, but sincerely tried to help us; he is also to be remembered with gratitude. The story of Sri Rama, expressing his gratitude to the squirrel is a lesson for others to follow. Ingratitude is inexcusable; and creating our enemies without our knowledge.
17) A person who wants to gain respect from others should respect others and he must be always friendly to others , no matter what social class he belongs or low educated. One should never be a ‘snob’. A snob is a person who looks down upon a person and resents him/her because he is poorer or less educated than himself and feels he is rich or highly educated.
18) When a colleague or a friend is in difficulty one must be kind and helpful to him; at the same time, one should be very careful that his kindness or helpful nature is not taken for granted or demanded or misused. Helping nature and kindness should never be mistaken for weakness.
19) Too much intimacy with any one leads to negligence and contempt. So it is better to have a respectable distance even with a friend or others. It helps to gain respectability and gain independent personality.
20) One has to keep one’s body and mind , healthy and fit for the job. One has to be careful about his food habits and keep his mind calm , contented and peaceful . This helps to have an attractive personality and brings success in a person’s career.
“Who works for glory misses oft the goal,
Who works for money coins his very soul ;
Work for the work’s sake , the end it may be
These others shall be added unto thee.”
( note :- oft :often, many times; coins his very soul : hardens and spoils his own soul ; These others : glory and money : added unto thee : added to you , come to you )
Those who love their work and work for work’s sake i.e. work with sincerity and honesty gains both glory (fame and name ) and money, in the end; but others miss them ( who work only for glory or fame and money fail to get them.)
